Actuator-Sensor Interface (AS-i) is a smart cabling solution that reduces wiring on the field for binary sensors, actuators and power supply units by transmitting power and data over a single flat cable. What AS-i Is – Intelligent Cabling for the Lowest Field Level
AS-i is at the bottom of the automation hierarchy, interfacing between the simplest I/O sensors and actuators and a master controller. Eliminates the need to have individual home run cable lines from each device back to the PLC I/O cards.
Replacing Parallel Wiring with a Two-Wire Bus
With a traditional parallel wiring system each sensor and actuator needs a separate cable, terminal and I/O point. This is all combined into one intelligent cable, significantly lowering material costs, labor, and potential failures, and enabling reliable communication of binary signals.
Master–Slave Architecture at Field Level
AS-i network configuration: One master is used to manage a number of slaves (I/O modules, sensors or actuators). Extended addressing – 1 master, up to 62 slaves. Each slave has multiple input/output ports which allow hundreds of digital I/O points on a single cable segment. This master-slave design guarantees the deterministic performance, which is crucial for real-time control in the industrial environment.
The AS-i Cable – Two-Wire Flat, Unshielded, Power + Data
At the heart of AS-i’s simplicity is its specially designed flat cable that facilitates easy connections and flexible routing.
Yellow Flat Cable for Power and Communication
The standard yellow AS-i cable is a flat, unshielded, two-conductor cable which can also carry auxiliary power (usually 24 V DC) and data to field devices. Its distinctive shape offers a reverse polarity protection and mechanical coding for error-free mounting.
Optional Black Flat Cable for Auxiliary 24 V
A single black flat auxiliary cable provides extra 24 V DC power for higher powered actuators or loads when needed over the yellow cable’s power capacity. This ensures the communication bus is kept clean and the primary AS-i network is not affected by the heavier loads that this allows.
Insulation-Piercing Connections Anywhere Along the Cable
AS-i slaves are connected with insulation-piercing technology, which requires no special tools or stripping of wires. The modules just attach to the flat cable anywhere and can be added, moved or replaced quickly during commissioning or maintenance.
Network Capacity, Speed and Determinism – Practical Specs
AS-i offers good performance at the field level, not requiring high bandwidth networks.
Number of Slaves and I/O Capacity
Maximum addressing is 31 slaves per master, using standard addressing or 62 slaves per master using extended addressing. Multiple I/O per slave: A single AS-i segment can handle large digital I/O density for sensor-rich machines.
Cycle Time and Determinism
In the typical case, a 31 slave configuration has typical cycle times of approximately 5 mS; the cycle time is deterministic and repeatable, even with longer configurations. This predictability is essential for the synchronized control of valves, switches and actuators.
Cable Length Limits and Extensions
A standard AS-i segment can accommodate up to 100 m. This can be extended many times (up to 300 m or more, depending on configuration) with repeaters and extension plugs, and when used to cover larger machines or lines.
How AS-i Changes Wiring Architecture Compared to Parallel Wiring
With the introduction of AS-i, panel/field wiring becomes lightweight, compact, and easy to use.
Traditional Parallel Wiring – One Cable per Device
Hard-wired systems generate tight cable bundles, lots of terminals, splitter boxes and I/O cards. This will lead to a rise in material consumption, installation time, troubleshooting time and the entire system cost.
AS-i Architecture – One Intelligent Cable for Many Devices
The cable is a yellow flat cable (with optional black auxiliary cable) that connects dozens of devices. Slaves tap in through piercing connections and the master connects a segment to the PLC, cutting cable runs and the complexity of the panel.
Fewer Terminals, IO Cards and Cable Lines
Because of AS-i there are no need for much I/O hardware or copper, which results in smaller control cabinets, reduced weight, reduced waste, and easier future expansion.

AS-i masters with integrated gateways can be easily integrated into PROFIBUS, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET and other higher-level networks. The PLC segment will be treated as a single remote I/O node.
Lowest-Level Bus Under Fieldbus/Ethernet
This hierarchical structure allows AS-i to cope with simple binary devices without requiring the higher buses to run these devices, while other complex drives and data intensive applications are handled by the higher buses, saving overall system performance and diagnostics.

Wiring requires less complexity in areas with a lot of proximity switches, photoeyes, pneumatic valves, etc., which are present in conveyor systems, packaging machines, and valve manifolds.
Modular Machines and Decentralized IO
Modular production lines can be reconfigured as needed, with AS-i slaves plugged into anywhere on the cable, and no panel rewiring.
Analog Slaves and Integration of Simple Measurement Devices
Basic analog signals (pressure, temperature) can also be integrated, if the slaves are compatible with AS-I, making use of AS-I for more than just binary I/O.
